A CONFIDENT FIRST LESSON

You bring the teaching.
We'll help with the rest.

Your practical guide to setting up, teaching online and keeping families informed.

01 / BEFORE YOUR FIRST LESSON

A few minutes of preparation.

  1. Complete your tutor application.

Register, open Become a tutor, and submit your subjects, grade range, qualifications and teaching details. Our team reviews your application. Once approved, sign out and sign in again to open your teaching account.

  2. Choose a quiet place and a reliable connection.

Use a charged laptop and headphones where possible. A phone can join lessons, but use a desktop or laptop when you need to share your screen. Have your notes and practice questions ready.

  3. Try your camera and microphone.

Open the equipment check, allow access when prompted and speak to check the microphone meter. Test your speakers too. Close the test before joining a lesson. You can teach with your camera off when bandwidth is limited.

02 / MAKE YOUR TIME AVAILABLE

Two ways to teach.

ONE TO ONE

Add available times.

In Availability, choose a date, start time and duration. Parents book and pay through Tutorke. Confirmed private lessons appear in My lessons.

Set availability ↗
SMALL GROUPS

Create a programme.

Choose Create a group class. Enter the subject, grade, learning outcomes, weekly schedule, session count, seat limit and total programme price. Admin reviews it before publication.

Create a programme ↗

Group session times appear in your account even while a programme is awaiting review. Before teaching, check that the class is published and that there are paid learners.

03 / YOUR LIVE CLASSROOM

Open the lesson. Start a conversation.

  1. Open your lesson from My lessons.

Join up to 10 minutes before its start. Read any preparation notes from home. Select Open classroom and use the prejoin screen to choose your devices.

  2. Turn on your microphone when you're ready.

Camera and microphone start off for privacy. Check the Mic and Camera controls before speaking. Greet learners, confirm they can hear you and state the lesson goal.

  3. Use the teaching controls.

Open the People panel to see who has joined and use host controls where needed to manage microphones or remove a participant. Learners can raise a hand. To present, select the screen-share control and choose a tab or window; stop sharing when finished.

  4. Keep the lesson active.

Explain a short idea, work through an example and invite a learner to try. Check understanding regularly. Screen sharing is enabled for the tutor; learner screen sharing is off. Use a document or slides for worked examples.

Keep the classroom personal and focused.

Use TutorKE for lesson access and follow-up. Paid learners enter with their own lesson access; there is no knocking queue. Don't send raw Daily links to families. In-call text chat and recording are off; use the lesson conversation for written follow-ups. A shared whiteboard is not included in this version.

A simple plan for a 45-minute lesson
TimeFocus
First 5 minutesWelcome, sound check and one clear learning goal.
Next 10 minutesExplain the idea and model one worked example.
Next 20 minutesGuided practice, questions and individual checks.
Last 10 minutesReview learning, answer final questions and explain the homework.
04 / AFTER THE LESSON

Make the next step clear.

  1. Leave the classroom.

Use the Leave control. The room closes 5 minutes after the scheduled end. Leave the call before scrolling down to write your follow-up.

  2. Add homework and individual feedback.

Save the practice instructions on the lesson page. Families can type answers or upload a PDF, JPG or PNG up to 5 MB. Review submissions and save each learner's summary and next steps.

  3. Mark the lesson delivered.

After its scheduled end, select Mark lesson delivered if you actually taught it. Open My earnings for delivered-session earnings, the agreed commission and recorded payouts. A no-show or disputed lesson should go to support for review.

The lesson conversation is shared with all booked parents in a group lesson. Put individual learning feedback in that learner's update, and report sensitive concerns privately through support.

WHEN SOMETHING GETS IN THE WAY

Let's get you teaching again.

My camera or microphone is blocked.

Use your browser's site permissions to allow the camera and microphone. Check the device selector in the classroom, close other apps using the device and rejoin. Your operating system may also need to allow access. Try the equipment check before the next lesson.

I cannot hear anyone, or there is an echo.

Check the device volume and selected speaker, and ask the tutor whether their microphone is on. Use headphones. If two devices are in the same room, keep only one device's microphone and speaker active. You can play a test tone on the equipment-check page.

The connection is slow or keeps dropping.

Turn your camera off, close downloads and other video apps, and move closer to Wi-Fi or try a stronger connection. Keep the lesson tab open while it reconnects. If the call ends, join again from the same lesson page. Rejoining is allowed during the classroom's access window.

The Join button is unavailable.

Classrooms open 10 minutes before the scheduled start and close 5 minutes after the end. Check the Kenya time shown and refresh when the opening time arrives. Families need a confirmed paid booking. A cancelled lesson cannot be joined. Contact support if a payment is awaiting review.

I cannot share my screen.

Screen sharing is available to tutors and administrators using a supported desktop browser. Mobile browsers can view a shared screen but cannot start sharing. Check your browser and operating-system screen-recording permissions. Learner screen sharing is disabled in Tutorke.

Who can see messages and homework?

The lesson conversation is visible to the tutor and all parents booked into that lesson. Families can access their own learners' homework and individual feedback. Use support for sensitive matters. Classroom recording and in-call text chat are disabled.
