Christian approaches to issues related to employment
Christian views on issues related to employment are guided by the teachings of the Bible and social teachings of the Church.
Employment
The term employment refers to the act of hiring or
engaging someone to do a certain task with pay. Although the Bible does not provide guidelines on hiring procedures of workers and the employment itself, nevertheless there are certain general principles that refer to fact that employment is a human right and workers deserve to be treated justly. For example, in the book of
Leviticus, employers are advised:
-“Do not take advantage of anyone or rob him. Do not hold back the wages of someone you have hired, not even for one night”(Leviticus 19:13)
-In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus stated that: “…..the labourer deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7)
-Paul advised Christians who were employers to pay those in their employment a fair wage (1 Timothy 5:18). He also asked them to share with their employees some of the profits. Such actions encourage loyalty and increase motivation in the workers.
-Following God’s commandment on the Sabbath, a Christian should give employees time to worship. This time is not only important for worship, but it also gives employees time to relax and renew their energies.
-Jesus’ commandment of love is an important principles to guide the relationship between the employer and employees. When love exists
in places of work, there is less friction and instead more productivity and mutual respect for all.
