Irrigation Schemes in Kenya: Mwea-Tebere Irrigation Scheme
- Located in Kirinyaga district in central region in Mwea plains on the foot of Mt. Kenya.
- Started by the colonial government early 1950’s.
-covers an area of about 10,000 hectares.
-the water used in the scheme comes from three main rivers which are tributaries of river Tana.
Namely: River Thiba, Nyamindi and Murubaru.
-it is divided into four blocks/sections:mwea, Tebere, Thiba,Wamumu.
-The Main Crop grown is Rice.
