Characters are created by the author to convey certain information and at the same time entertain the audience. The author models the characters in a way that readers are in a position to point out certain attributes that either earn sympathy or empathy from the readers. The audience relate to their tribulations and forms a kind of connection to the story.
Resian is one of the protagonist in this novel. She is the daughter is a daughter to Kaelo and sister to Taiyo. She attempt to fight the forces of negative Nasila traditions that are pulling women down. She represents the girls who are enlightened in the society. Through her, themes such as female genital mutilation, determination and education have been portrayed as her quest to save herself indicates the abandoning a cherished Nasila culture of FGM, polygamy and early planned marriage. The struggle that she goes through and circumstances around her creates an interesting flow of the plot. Her victory gives hope to the reader that determined people are always rewarded in life. She plays a key role in developing characters such as Oloisudori, Mama Milanoi, Ole Kaelo and Olarinkoi. For instance, the greed of Ole Kaelo is portrayed by agreeing to give her to the evil Oloisudiri to secure his wealth.
Ole Kaelo is the main protagonist in this novel. The plot of this novel. He plays a key role in development of the theme of corruption. We are able to encounter the corrupt Oloisudori and his dirty games through him. Ole Kaelo plays a central role in revealing the struggle that one has to go through to fit in a society that is male dominant. We see this when Mama Milanoi has to submit to him without questioning. His family plays a bigger part in development of plot by building the conflict in this novel.
Oloisudori is a successful business man in Nasila. He is also Kaelo’s business partner. He is a shadowy figure; a Jack -of-all-trades. He is also, a poacher, smuggler, robber, extortionist and a hired assassin. He had survived numerous jail terms and was now incorrigible as revealed by Joseph Parmuat. We can see the style of dilemma used by the author when he enters the lives of the Kaelos. His role in this novel is to bring out the theme of marriage and cultural decay among others. He engages in all sorts of vices in order to amass wealth. When Oloisudori meets Resian for the first time, his amorous character is evident. He openly scans her body and cranes his neck to watch her. In his presence, Resian is uncomfortable for she felt from his looks as if her blouse was unbuttoned. She also feels as if he was caressing her entire body with his hands against her will. He tells Ole Kaelo his intention to marry his daughter very callously and as if he was talking about a goat or a sheep. He is a perfect example of Nasila people who portrays cultural decay.
In conclusion the above discussed characters plays key roles in developing themes, styles and building other characters in the novel.
