Joseph Parmuat felt differently. When he went back to his house that evening after coaching the girls, something seemed to have changed dramatically. He recalled Taiyo's dazzling smile and the way her beauty filled him with enchantment. But the enchanting feeling seemed to have evaporated fast and in its place, his heart was now filled with a devastating feeling of hopelessness. There was a strange emptiness in him, a sort of hollowness he had never experienced before. His heart was desolate like a deserted house.
He could not place the problem. He had won the heart of the girl he ardently admired. That should have filled his heart with exhilaration. Instead, it was filled with a frightening premonition. Yes, he now knew. He was like a fish that had just jumped out of water in pursuit of one morsel, but was now finding itself unable to breath and was on the verge of death. Yes, it had swallowed the morsel, but what good...

a) What happens before the excerpt?
Taiyo goes to Joseph Parmuat’s in his house and confesses her love for him. She succeeds in making him confess his love for her too. They talk about the implications of their love for each other but Taiyo says she doesn’t care what might befall them. Then they join Resian later in the practice room.
b) Why is Joseph feeling strange emptiness instead of being happy?
i)
Joseph dread the judgement that the culture will subject him to. Being a moran he understands what Nasila culture means to the Nasila people, which is, including himself too. He is therefore in a dilemma, afraid of losing Taiyo and also fears betraying the culture.

c) Give and illustrate one character trait of Joseph Parmuat.
He is cautious-He cautiously handle the matter of their love by engaging himself in a contemplation of the steps he is about to make. He takes into consideration both his feelings and the stand of the culture concerning such matters.
e) What subject matter is portrayed in this excerpt?
Conflict-Joseph is having an internal conflict. His love for Taiyo is conflicting the Nasila culture which prohibits people from the same clan to marry. The fact that Taiyo is among the intoiye nemengalana is also disturbing him since it’s against the Nasila cultural practices.
d) Compare and contrast the attitude of Taiyo and that of Joseph in relation to the Nasila culture as portrayed in this excerpt.
Both Taiyo and Joseph both have a defiant attitude since they love each other in spite the fact the culture does not allow them being of the same clan.
We can say to some extent Joseph’s attitude towards the culture is devoted because he wonders if he would abandon the culture for a woman. He later chooses to decline her love. Taiyo’s attitude, on the other hand is a rebellious attitude, she says that she will not a low culture that does not feed her, clothe or house her to dictate her life.

e) Mention and illustrate one stylistic device is used in this excerpt.
