A sample of water is suspected to contain sulphate ions. Describe an experiment that can be carried out to determine the presence of sulphate ions.

Add a few drops of barium nitrate solution to the water sample followed by some drops of hydrochloric acid.
White precipitate are formed which do not dissolve in HCl indicating presence of sulphate ions.
