Precautions that should be taken when describing physical features and Human activities on Topographical maps.
1. Definite words should be avoided. For instance, it is inappropriate to say that, “the presence of seasonal rivers in the area is an evidence of seasonal rainfall”.
The right phases too use are: “possibility”, “suggest that” and “likely indication of”
2. One clue should not come out with a conclusive description. For instance, “presence of coffee in an area may be used to show that the area receives heavy
rainfall” but this is not always true
- Coffee, especially Robusta can be grown under irrigation even in dry areas.
3. Avoid the following phases when reading a map.
a) “The right corner of the map”
b) “Top of the map”
c) “Left corner of the map”
d) “The river flows forward left, upwards, downwards or to the right”’
Appropriate phases include:
a) “The south eastern part of the area”
b) “The northern part of the area”
c) “The north western part of the area”
d) “The river flows westwards, northwards southwards, or eastwards”.
4. Study the map before looking at the key.
- Use the key to interpret the information you have got from the map
- Key simple indicates all the conventional phenomena on any map
