SETTLEMENT.
- It refers to built-up environment.
- Also used to refer to villages, the infrastructure, the towns or any place where human activities take place.
Types of settlement.
- There are 2 types of human settlement:
(a) Rural settlements:
- Are build up areas in the countryside.
- Are the farmsteads, the villages and all human activities carried on in the countryside.
- Are usually pre-occupied with primary production activities like crop production.
- Are generally agricultural based with the main function being to house the agricultural population
- There are villages which are concerned with fishing; usually sited on rivers, lakes or coasts.
(b) Urban settlements:
- “Urban” means town.
- Are predominantly occupied with commercial and industrial activities.
- Most people in towns are either traders or employed in offices and industries.
- Urban areas usually perform secondary and tertiary activities e.g. banking, insurance, administration, e.t.c.
