Types of drugs
(i) Medical Drugs
-These are drugs that doctors prescribe to patients for different purposes. These include tranquillizers, sedatives and palliatives drugs. Tranquillizers are drugs which relieve tension and also induce
sleep. Examples of tranquillizers are piriton and valium. A patient with a psychiatric problem may be given tranquillizers to alleviate depression or anxiety.
- Sedatives are drugs given to a patient to reduce pain and induce sleep. Sedatives include drugs like
Panadol, codeime and aspirin.
-Palliative drugs are used to treat chronic diseases such as cancer, asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.
- They help in reducing pain and prolonging life. Other drugs such as different types of vaccines, vitamins and minerals are used to prevent diseases. Some medical drugs fight germs and bacteria for example, antibiotics such as penicillin. Diseases that require antibiotics to cure them are malaria, pneumonia and tuberculosis.
-Medical drugs are used to cure diseases and to restore good health.
-When used carelessly without doctor’s supervision, they may cause addiction, aggravate the person’s illness or even cause death. Medical drugs should be dispensed by a pharmacist on a doctor’s prescription because if used wrongly they may be fatal.
