Answer Text:
In the novel Blossoms of the Savannah, we can fault Mama Milanoi for the ordeals that her daughters goes through because first, she is their mother and secondly, she is their fellow woman. Being their mother, we expect her to protect them from early marriage but instead she keeps quiet and does not speak to oppose her husband’s plans to marrying off her daughters to an old man. This is despite the fact that she is inwardly opposed to the whole idea. She is also aware that Resian would not allow it but still goes ahead to concur with his husband and Oloisudori’s plan of kidnaping her if she refuses. For this reason Resian escapes from home and is forced to suffer in the hands of the deceptive Olarinkoi. Mama Milanoi is in support of F.G.M even as her daughters fight to resist the harmful practice. The writer puts, “Did she not support female genital mutilation that was prevalent among her people in Nasila?” (p.63).She starts a conversation with Resian where she shares her opinion about FGM. The fact that she is not ignorant of her daughters’ stand about the same is the reason why we blame her for the ordeal that she allows Resian to go through.
Despite being a woman and a mother, she is giving Taiyo over to the enkamuratani to be circumcised (p.272-273).This is the least we expect from a caring mother. She not only fails to protect her from this women, but she also fails to protect her from a forceful marriage to Oloisudori. This is the reason why Taiyo is subjected to the mental torture and physical pain she under goes.
Mama Milanoi fails to present the request of her daughters of joining the Egerton University. This is very evident when Ole Kaelo is wondering what Resian is speaking about when he calls her to talk about matters concerning her future. If she would have intervened for the daughters, may be they would have been granted by their father the opportunity to go and study, which would have spared them the suffering they go through.
In conclusion, we are not wrong to say that Mama Milanoi has
greatly failed her daughters and is the one to blame for all that befalls them.
