The figure below shows a circuit for charging and discharging a capacitor c, through a variable resistor R. X, Y and T are points on two-way switch. Explain how the charging processes are achieved.

When T and X are connected, capacitor C is being charged by E. This continues until C attains the same potential as E. When T is connected to Y the capacitor C is being discharged through resistor R. This continues until there is no flow of current.
